Miami, Florida - The United States and Cuba held a technical meeting to discuss human smuggling and fraud prevention in Miami February 1-4. Working level representatives from both governments met for the purpose of exchanging information and best practices related to combatting human smuggling and travel document fraud, which is important to advancing both countries’ commitment to ensuring safe, legal, and orderly migration.

Washington, DC - In response to the opioid abuse epidemic, today Dr. Robert Califf, the FDA’s Deputy Commissioner for Medical Products and Tobacco, along with other FDA leaders, called for a far-reaching action plan to reassess the agency’s approach to opioid medications. The plan will focus on policies aimed at reversing the epidemic, while still providing patients in pain access to effective relief.

Reston, Virginia - Globally there were 14,588 earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 or greater in 2015.  This worldwide number is on par with prior year averages of about 40 earthquakes per day of magnitude 4.0, or about 14,500 annually.  The 2015 number may change slightly as the final results are completed by seismic analysts at the USGS National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colorado.

Washington, DC - A Bosnian-born Burlington, Vermont, man surrendered his U.S. citizenship because he lied about his military service during the Bosnian war and the court cancelled his certificate of naturalization. 

Torrance, California - The Department of Justice and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) announced a settlement to resolve allegations that Toyota Motor Credit Corporation (Toyota) engaged in a pattern or practice of discrimination against African-American and Asian/Pacific Islander borrowers in auto lending.  Toyota, based in Torrance, California, is the nation’s largest captive auto lender, and the fifth largest auto lender overall.
