Damascus, Syria – Militants fighting for The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) has reportedly abducted as many as 250 people from Syria’s Assyrian Christian communities including women and children.

The Secretary of State has authorized rewards of up to $3 million for information leading to the arrest or conviction of Abdul Saboor and up to $2 million for information leading to the arrest or conviction of Abdullah Nowbahar.

 

Washington, DC - The United States condemns in the strongest possible terms ISIL’s attacks yesterday on predominantly Assyrian Christian villages in the northeast Syrian province of Hasakeh, where they kidnapped dozens of civilians, including women, children, priests, and the elderly. Hundreds of other civilians remain trapped in villages surrounded by ISIL fighters, and clashes continue between ISIL and local forces defending their communities.

Washington, DC - The United States is deeply concerned by today’s decision by a Russian court to continue the detention of Ukrainian Member of Parliament Nadiya Savchenko to May 13. Ms. Savchenko has been on a hunger strike for 75 days to protest being held hostage by Russian authorities. The United States deplores her continued ill-treatment and is deeply concerned by reports of her deteriorating health.
