El Centro, California - The El Centro Police Department is deeply saddened to announce the death of Police Officer Efren Coronel. Officer Coronel was a senior patrol officer and assigned Officer in Charge (01C) for his patrol team. He passed away June 3, 2020, from medical complications due to him contracting the coronavirus while on duty.
He has served the El Centro community for nearly 24 years with honor and distinction. He was not only a police officer, but also someone that loved volunteering his time supporting youth programs and coaching youth soccer.
Officer Coronel started his career with the El Centro Police Department on December 17, 1996. He worked a variety of assignments throughout his career. He worked as a school resource officer, traffic investigations, and was assigned as a motor officer. He was 51 years old and is survived by his wife and two children.
