Sacramento, California - The complexity of drought impacts and a wide range of public perceptions will be discussed at the next California State Board of Food and Agriculture meeting on Tuesday, June 2, 2015. The meeting will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the California Department of Food and Agriculture, 1220 ‘N’ Street – Main Auditorium, Sacramento.

Los Angeles, California - A portion of Los Angeles County has been placed under quarantine for the guava fruit fly (GFF) following the detection of eight  adult GFF within the City of Long Beach.  The quarantine area in Los Angeles County measures 80 square miles, bordered on the north by Southern Avenue; on the south by E. Stearns Street; on the west by Central Avenue; and on the east by Norwalk Boulevard. 

Sacramento, California - State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson awarded $244 million in grants today to 40 programs that blend academic and career technical education, connect employers with schools, and train students for jobs in high-demand fields, such as health care, advanced manufacturing, information technology, and software development.

Los Angeles, California - The former owner of a Los Angeles-based medical supply company was sentenced today to seven years in prison for his role in a fraud scheme that resulted in $3.3 million in fraudulent claims to Medicare.

San Quentin, California - Condemned inmate Michael Lamont Jones, 44, who was on California’s death row from Riverside County, was pronounced dead at San Quentin State Prison on Monday afternoon, May 25, 2015, at 3:51 p.m. The cause of death is pending the results of an autopsy; however, the death is being investigated as a suicide. Jones was single-celled.

Sacramento, California - Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia (D-Coachella) joined the Assembly Select Committee on the Status of Boys and Men of Color in the first of many hearings to examine the community safety and justice barriers facing many young boys and men of color throughout the state.
