Justice Department Resolves Sexual Harassment Lawsuit Against Landlord and His Employee

Boston, Massachusetts - The Justice Department announced today that it has secured a settlement resolving allegations that Worcester, Massachusetts, landlord Mohan Prashad and his maintenance worker, David Besaw, violated the Fair Housing Act by sexually harassing female tenants. The settlement also resolves claims against Lanaton LLC and Savton LLC, which, along with Prashad, owned the properties where the harassment occurred.
Justice Department Sues to Block U.S. Sugar’s Proposed Acquisition of Imperial Sugar

Savannah, Georgia - The Department of Justice filed a civil antitrust lawsuit today to stop United States Sugar Corporation (U.S. Sugar) from acquiring its rival, Imperial Sugar Company (Imperial Sugar). The complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, alleges that the transaction would leave an overwhelming majority of refined sugar sales across the Southeast in the hands of only two producers. As a result, American businesses and consumers would pay more for refined sugar, a significant input for many foods and beverages.
Chiropractor Pleads Guilty and Agrees to $9 Million False Claims Act Consent Judgment

Columbia, South Carolina - The U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina entered a $9 million civil consent judgment for the United States against South Carolina chiropractor Daniel McCollum under the False Claims Act. On that same day, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of South Carolina filed an information and plea agreement in which McCollum admitted to engaging in a conspiracy to pay illegal kickbacks and to defraud healthcare programs by billing for unnecessary medical services. The maximum criminal penalty McCollum could face is five years in prison and a fine of $250,000. A sentencing date has not been set.

Sacramento, California - Governor Gavin Newsom today announced his nomination of Judge Laurie M. Earl as Associate Justice of the Third District Court of Appeal. The Governor also announced his appointment of 11 Superior Court Judges, which include one in Alameda County; one in Kings County; three in Los Angeles County; one in Merced County; one in Modoc County; one in Nevada County; two in Sacramento County; and one in Tulare County.
