Washington, DC - Every day, plant species across the globe are disappearing. The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reports that approximately 75 percent of the Earth’s plant genetic resources are now extinct, and another third of plant biodiversity is expected to disappear by 2050. Up to 100,000 plant varieties are currently endangered worldwide.

Imperial, California - The first of two opening days of California’s dove hunting season is fast approaching. This year’s season for mourning dove, white-winged dove, spotted dove and ringed turtle dove will run from Tuesday, September 1 through Tuesday, September 15 statewide, followed by a second hunt period, Saturday, November 14 through Monday, December 28.
CDPH’s California Reducing Disparities Project Request for Proposals

Sacramento, California - California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Director and State Health Officer Dr. Karen Smith today announced that CDPH is accepting proposals for projects that will help reduce mental health disparities across the state. Through its California Reducing Disparities Project (CRDP), the department will award $60 million in contracts and grants over the next four years.
Fresno Man Sentenced to More Than 11 Years in Prison for Sex Trafficking of a Minor in San Luis Obispo

Fresno, California - Javier Solis, 29, of Fresno, was sentenced today by United States District Judge Anthony W. Ishii to 11 years and nine months in prison for sex trafficking of a minor, United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced. On August 17, 2015, co‑defendant Michael Anthony Andrade, 34, was sentenced to 12 years and seven months in prison.
Increasingly Severe Disturbances Weaken World’s Temperate Forests

Albany, California - A new paper published Monday in Science magazine has synthesized existing studies on the health of temperate forests across the globe and found a sobering diagnosis. Longer, more severe, and hotter droughts and a myriad of other threats, including diseases and more extensive and severe wildfires, are threatening some of these forests with transformation. Without informed management, some forests could convert to shrublands or grasslands within the coming decades.
