Washington, DC - U.S. Science Envoy Dr. Geraldine Richmond returns to Southeast Asia March 4-19 in support of the Obama Administration’s initiative to strengthen the United States’ science and education relationships overseas. This is Dr. Richmond’s fourth trip to Southeast Asia as a U.S. Science Envoy. Dr. Richmond will build on her previous visits, making three stops in the region:
March 7-8: Professor Richmond joins the U.S. delegation at the inaugural U.S.-Thailand Joint Commission Meeting on Science and Technology in Bangkok to discuss how to advance the use of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) to address critical global needs such as food, health, energy, and technology commercialization. Dr. Richmond also will provide her insights on STEM education and women in science in the region from her experiences as a Science Envoy.
March 10: Dr. Richmond will travel to Phnom Penh to participate in the Cambodia Science & Technology Festival and give a talk entitled “Why I Love Being a Scientist”.
March 14-19: Dr. Richmond will facilitate the Developmental Neuroscience and Stunting: A Strong Case for Action in the First 1000 Days Workshop in Luang Prabang, Laos. Invitees include researchers from the region, The Gates Foundation, and the Oregon School of Health. The U.S. Department of State will host the event and Lao government officials and representatives from the U.S. Embassy in Vientiane will also participate.
Professor Richmond is the Presidential Chair of Chemistry at the University of Oregon, and president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). She is also the founder and chair of the Committee on the Advancement of Women Chemists (COACh).
