Washington, DC - The President today spoke by phone with President Xi Jinping of China to coordinate efforts in responding to North Korea's January 6 nuclear test. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the complete and verifiable denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. Both leaders also conveyed that they will not accept North Korea as a nuclear weapon state.
They agreed that North Korea's planned ballistic missile test would contravene multiple U.N. Security Council resolutions and represent another provocative and destabilizing action. Finally, the leaders emphasized the importance of a strong and united international response to North Korea's provocations, including through an impactful UN Security Council Resolution.
