Washington, DC - The United States applauds the successful outcome of the World Summit on the Information Society ten-year review, which concluded today at a high level meeting of the UN General Assembly.
The outcome document adopted today by consensus charts a clear path for the expanding role of information and communications technologies (ICT), including the Internet, as drivers of development and indispensable platforms for the exercise of fundamental freedoms and human rights. It is yet another important step toward ensuring that our modern information society is people-centered and inclusive.
This successful meeting culminates a two-year-long review process, which featured the active input and engagement by all stakeholders—governments, the private sector, civil society, and technical and academic communities. And, it is another reminder of the role of the United Nations in promoting global action on issues that affect us all.
