Washington, DC - Secretary of State John Kerry: "On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I congratulate the people of Peru as you celebrate your independence on July 28.
"Last year I visited your country for the 20th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. I met Peruvians from all walks of life. I spoke with storekeepers in Lima. I toured the Plaza de Armas and marveled at your architecture. I met with President Humala at the Presidential Palace. And I had the honor to speak to delegates from around the world about the importance of global action to address climate change. I left your nation proud that our two peoples share a commitment to democracy, human rights, social inclusion, and press freedom.
"Together we are creating economic opportunity and prosperity in Peru and the United States. Nearly 1,000 Peruvians have pursued degrees in the United States through funding from the J. William Fulbright Fellowship Program. And our cooperation on environmental protection helps to preserve your incredible biodiversity and fight climate change across the globe.
"On this day of celebration, I wish all Peruvians peace and prosperity in the years ahead."
