Washington, DC - On his first trip to China as U.S. Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo met with President Xi Jinping, Politburo Member Yang Jiechi, and Foreign Minister and State Councilor Wang Yi in Beijing on June 14. Secretary Pompeo affirmed our interest in forging a constructive and results-based relationship between the United States and China.

In his meetings with Chinese leaders, the Secretary noted the key outcomes of President Trump’s historic June 12 Singapore summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The Secretary emphasized U.S. resolve to achieve the complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and to facilitate a lasting and stable peace regime. The Secretary impressed on Chinese leaders the importance of full implementation of all relevant UN Security Council Resolutions related to North Korea and affirmed that the DPRK faces a bright future if Pyongyang denuclearizes quickly.

Secretary Pompeo reaffirmed our deep concerns about the building and militarizing of outposts in the South China Sea, as those actions increase tensions, complicate and escalate disputes, endanger the free flow of trade, and undermine regional stability. Secretary Pompeo reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to ensure that the United States and China have a fair and balanced trade and investment relationship. Secretary Pompeo also reaffirmed the importance of regular engagement to address a range of other issues in the bilateral relationship.
