Washington, DC - The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced today they will host a Homeland Security Day in Silicon Valley on April 29, bringing together technology startups, investors, CBP leaders and stakeholders to discuss unique opportunities to further promote the safety of the traveling public and CBP officers, as well as the security of the global supply chain.
“Today’s technology is being rapidly and continuously advanced by start-ups, entrepreneurs and small businesses,” said DHS Under Secretary for Science and Technology Dr. Reginald Brothers. “Our Homeland Security Day in Silicon Valley and similar events in other locations allow DHS S&T to strengthen partnerships and discuss some of the Department’s toughest challenges with these important players in the tech industry.”
As the largest federal agency in the U.S., CBP’s broad mission and expansive global operational footprint provides companies a unique environment to pilot and apply their technology. CBP’s workforce processes more than a million international travelers and more than 72,000 cargo containers a day, while agents monitor and patrol thousands of miles of border with aircraft, vehicles and vessels, and even horses and canines.
“Steady growth in international trade and travel drives U.S. Customs and Border Protection to innovate the way we provide security and facilitate commerce across our borders,” said Deputy Commissioner Kevin McAleenan. “We are excited to pursue new partnerships in Silicon Valley as we seek more efficient and effective capabilities across our diverse operational environments.”
The Homeland Security Day is directed towards startups and investors, but is open to all innovators. Through events like this, and funding early stage commercial solutions, S&T’s approach is to accelerate the transition of start-of-the-art technology into use by DHS and other users within the Homeland Security Enterprise.
