Washington, DC - Deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken will lead the U.S. delegation to the General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS), the Western Hemisphere’s premier multilateral organization. The meeting will take place in Washington, D.C. June 15-16 at OAS headquarters, and will be the first General Assembly under the leadership of OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro Lemes, who assumed office on May 26.
The Deputy Secretary will engage in discussions and consultations with regional counterparts on issues of shared interest. Present at Secretary General Almagro’s election in March the Deputy Secretary will underscore the United States’ continued commitment to the reform and strengthening of the OAS. He will also reaffirm the importance of the OAS’ leading role in advancing democracy, human rights, sustainable development and security cooperation throughout the Americas, consistent with the principles enshrined in the OAS Charter and the Inter-American Democratic Charter.
The U.S. delegation will include Roberta Jacobson, Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs, John D. Feeley, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs, and Michael J. Fitzpatrick, Interim U.S. Permanent Representative to the OAS.
