Sacramento, California - On the eve of NASA’s InSight Mars mission launch, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today issued a proclamation declaring May 4, 2018 as “Space Day” in the State of California.

The challenge and the promise of outer space unite all of humanity in a shared sense of curiosity, hope and wonderment. Our quest to explore space has also yielded innumerable advances in technology, engineering and every scientific field, to the benefit of our daily lives.

California’s universities, research institutes and aerospace businesses have made the Golden State a world leader in space science and exploration. These pioneering institutions have enabled many milestones of the Space Age, including the upcoming InSight mission to Mars, led by Caltech’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. This historic mission will lift off from the Vandenberg Air Force Base, marking the first interplanetary launch from the West Coast.

On this day, let us celebrate new feats in space exploration that captivate the world’s imagination and inspire the next generation of scientists and innovators to expand the frontiers of discovery.

NOW THEREFORE I, EDMUND G. BROWN JR., Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim May 4, 2018, as “Space Day.”
