New York - Cesar Altieri Sayoc was sentenced yesterday to 20 years in prison in connection with his mailing of 16 improvised explosive devices to victims across the country. SAYOC pled guilty to a 65-count Superseding Information on March 21, before U.S. District Judge Jed S. Rakoff, who also imposed Tuesday’s sentence.

Washington, DC - LLB Verwaltung (Switzerland) AG, formerly known as “Liechtensteinische Landesbank (Schweiz) AG” (LLB-Switzerland), a Swiss-based private bank, reached a resolution with the United States Department of Justice, announced Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Richard E. Zuckerman of the Justice Department’s Tax Division Monday. As part of the agreement, LLB-Switzerland will pay a penalty of $10,680,554.64 to the United States.

Escondido, California - Edward, a 13-day-old southern white rhino calf at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, got his first chance to experience a true mud wallow this morning today, under the watchful eye of his mom, Victoria. Rhino keepers decided to create a wallow for the youngster to provide him the opportunity to experience an instinctive behavior for rhinos. Keepers scooped up mud from the area around the Nikita Kahn Rhino Rescue Center, brought it to his yard and added water to create the wallow. After watching mom, the young rhino quickly figured out what to do, and he rolled around just the way mom did. By doing this, rhinos coat themselves with a thick layer of mud that helps act as a sunscreen and bug repellent, and helps to keep them cool.

Washington, DC - Earlier this week, the U.S. Department of Commerce issued the affirmative preliminary determination in the countervailing duty (CVD) investigation of imports of wooden cabinets and vanities and components thereof from China, finding that exporters received countervailable subsidies ranging from 10.97 to 229.24 percent.

Sacramento, California - Continuing his commitment to strengthen California’s systems of higher education and partner with its leaders, Governor Gavin Newsom announced today the formation of the Governor’s Council for Post-Secondary Education. The Council will serve as an independent consultative resource to the Governor around the economic and social impact of higher education in the state. They will examine issues relating to future capacity, enrollment planning, community college transfers, general education and coordination at the state and regional levels, and make recommendations to the Governor for action. In addition to this Council, the Governor has convened – and will continue to engage – higher education advocates and stakeholders to advise him on issues relating to student access, affordability and success.
