Calexico, California - Monday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Calexico downtown port of entry apprehended a 29-year old fugitive with an outstanding felony warrant for sexual assault who attempted to use fraudulent documents to enter the United States.
“This is another example of good investigative work by our officers,” said Calexico Port Director Billy Whitford. “CBP officers continue to protect our country from people and goods that could do us harm.”
The incident occurred shortly before 5:30 p.m. on June 1, when Marvin Ulises Galeano Fuentes entered the downtown port on foot and presented a CBP officer a U.S. birth certificate and California identification card that did not legally belong to him. The officer noticed discrepancies with Galeano’s documentation and escorted him to a secure location for further review.
CBP officers conducted a ten-print query utilizing the Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS) confirming that Galeano was not a United States citizen, but rather a citizen of El Salvador and a lawful permanent resident of the U.S., and that he was wanted for sexual assault by the Weld County Sheriff's Office in Greely, Colorado.
Galeano was taken into custody and turned over to officers with the Calexico Police Department. He was later booked into the Imperial County Jail to await extradition.
CBP placed an immigration hold on Galeano to initiate removal from the United States at the conclusion of his criminal proceedings.
In fiscal year 2014, CBP officers at ports of entry along the California/Mexico border apprehended 2,065 individuals with outstanding felony warrants for such crimes as homicide, robbery and assault.
