Niland, California - The Niland Geyser continues to grow and the Imperial County Board of Supervisors extended their emergency proclamation.
The Niland Geyser is located about 5 miles northwest of the town of Niland and over the past several months it has moved an additional 60 feet to the west of where it was first noticed. The geyser has so far caused the Union Pacific Railroad to shuttle trains to an alternate track section ( a Shoofly ) which they constructed as part of their contingency plan. The geyser also continues to encroach on some critical infrastructure such as a Kinder Morgan Pipeline and State Highway 111. Caltrans officials are currently devising a contingency plan in the event the geyser affects the vital north-south highway. Imperial County is the Operational Area Coordinated for the event and Tuesday the County Board of Supervisors extended their earlier Emergency Proclamation.
