San Diego, California - The San Diego Zoo hosted a ceremony this morning to debut a U.S. Postal Service special pictorial stamp dedicated to sharks. The ceremony was held at the all-new Conrad Prebys Africa Rocks exhibit and featured remarks by representatives from the San Diego Zoo and U.S. Postal Service (USPS), followed by special enrichment activities for the leopard sharks residing at the Cape Fynbos habitat at Africa Rocks.

Washington, DC - Today, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced up to $3 million of new funding for fluid-power systems research for off-road vehicles. The Department's Vehicle Technologies Office (VTO) funds early-stage, high-risk research to generate knowledge upon which industry can develop and deploy innovative transportation energy technologies that improve efficiency, lower costs for families and businesses, and increase the use of secure, domestic energy sources.

Washington, DC - The Energy Department today announced six new contracts totaling $1.49 million awarded by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory under the DOE-funded Distributed Wind Competitiveness Improvement Project (CIP). Since 2013, the CIP has awarded 22 competitively-selected, cost-shared contracts to 12 different manufacturers and component suppliers for small and medium-sized wind turbine designs. Through five rounds of CIP, DOE has invested more than $5 million. Combined with awardee cost share, CIP-facilitated technology research and development investment totals over $8 million.

Hilo, Hawaii - Five young ‘alalā, two females and three males, were released into Pu‘u Maka‘ala Natural Area Reserve (NAR) on the Island of Hawai‘i on Wednesday, October 11th. This second group of birds joins a previous group that had been released into the forest at the end of September. These eleven birds represent what conservationists hope will be the beginning of a recovered population of the endangered crow species on the island.
