Washington, DC - On July 24, 2011, by Executive Order 13581, the President declared a national emergency with respect to transnational criminal organizations pursuant to the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (50 U.S.C. 1701-1706) to deal with the unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States constituted by the activities of significant transnational criminal organizations.

Washington, DC - The annual United States Government estimate of “Mexican Poppy Cultivation and Heroin Production” found poppy cultivation reached a record high in 2017. Poppy cultivation in Mexico rose 38 percent, from 32,000 hectares in 2016 to 44,100 hectares in 2017. Similarly, potential pure production rose by 37 percent, from 81 metric tons in 2016 to 111 metric tons in 2017.

Washington, DC - First Lady Melania Trump visited Microsoft Innovation and Policy Center in Washington D.C. today. As part of her Be Best campaign, the First Lady met with students involved in Microsoft’s Council for Digital Good. The council is comprised of 15 students from the United States who provide ideas and feedback for Microsoft’s youth-focused online safety policy work. The students had designed art projects representing individual expressions of digital civility. Mrs. Trump viewed all of the projects and listened as the students shared their process for creating their pieces.

Washington, DC - Recent Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreaks, including the 2013-2016 epidemic that ravaged West Africa and the 2018 outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, highlight the need for licensed treatments for this often-deadly disease. ZMapp, an experimental therapy comprising three monoclonal antibodies, has shown promise in a clinical trial, but it targets only one of the five known species of Ebola virus.
