San Diego, California - The University of California, San Diego is named the 19th best university in the world in U.S. News and World Report’s second-annual global rankings. The campus is one of only five public universities in the U.S. to make the top 20 in the list of the world’s top 750 colleges.
The rankings measure factors such as research, global and regional reputation, international collaboration as well as number of highly-cited papers and doctorates awarded.
The U.S. News Best Global Universities 2016 edition also features 22 subject rankings, in which UC San Diego received high marks for its academic areas, such as pharmacology and toxicology (4), neuroscience and behavior (6), biology and biochemistry (6), psychiatry and psychology (7), computer science (9), as well as molecular biology and genetics (10).
“We are very proud that UC San Diego’s premier academic programs continue to gain recognition worldwide,” said Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla. “This new ranking recognizes the strengths our rich academic portfolio and the talent of our faculty members.”

The Best Global Universities methodology – which is based on data and metrics provided by Thomson Reuters – weighs factors that measure a university’s global and regional reputation; academic research performance using bibliometric indicators; and school-level data on faculty and Ph.D. graduates. Each subject ranking has its own, similar methodology.
The methodology for the U.S. News Best Global Universities rankings is similar to other global rankings which also name UC San Diego among the best in the world. The campus was recently ranked the world’s 14th best university for the third consecutive year by the 2015 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). UC San Diego was also named the 21st best by the Center for the World University Rankings (CWUR)
