Sacramento, California - Acting Governor Gavin Newsom today issued the following statement regarding the death of Hayward Police Department Sergeant Scott Lunger:
“It is with profound sadness that Jennifer and I offer our condolences to Sergeant Lunger’s family, his friends, and his colleagues on their heartbreaking loss. We join all Californians in mourning his sacrifice, and honor his service to the people and communities of Hayward.”
Sgt. Lunger, 48, of Brentwood, was shot and killed this morning following a traffic stop in Hayward.
He was a 14-year veteran of the Hayward Police Department and previously served with the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office. Sgt. Lunger is survived by his two adult daughters.
In honor of Sgt. Lunger, Capitol flags will be flown at half-staff.
