Sacramento, California - The State Board of Education (SBE) is currently seeking applications for appointments to serve on the Child Nutrition Advisory Council (CNAC).
The CNAC supports the SBE by providing proactive leadership in health and nutrition for California’s youth, including recommending plans and guidelines for school and child care meal service and nutrition education programs.
CNAC Composition
California Education Code Section 49533 specifies the composition of the SBE’s appointments shall include one representative from each of the following:
- School board member
- School food service director
- School food service supervisor or manager
- Classroom teacher
- Curriculum coordinator
- Nutrition education specialist
- Public member
- Child care food program sponsor
- Qualified consultant specializing in nutrition, education, or health and welfare
- Representative from a locally recognized parent teacher organization
- Secondary high school student
The SBE is currently seeking applicants to fill four positions. Among those selected must be applicants representing teachers, high school students (sophomores and juniors may apply), locally recognized parent teacher organizations and school food service supervisors or managers.
The SBE encourages applications from individuals with strong knowledge, experience, and interest in child nutrition.
Term of Office
Each of the individuals selected to be CNAC members will start a three-year term beginning in January 2015, except for the student member who will serve a one-year term.
Frequency of Meetings
The CNAC generally meets for one day six times a year in Sacramento (Feb, Apr, June, Sept, Oct, and Dec). Depending upon workload, the SBE or CDE may call for additional meetings.
Travel, Lodging, and Other Expenses
Committee members will be reimbursed for travel and per diem expenses related to Committee meetings only, at the same rate applicable for CDE staff. No reimbursement will be made for other activities.

Please note that the application form requests that applicants provide both a resume and two letters of recommendation. The SBE also requests that applicants provide a letter of one page or less explaining their interest in and qualifications for serving on the CNAC.

All applications and corresponding materials must be received in the SBE Office by 5:00pm on Monday, December 15, 2014, in order to be considered for appointment.
All applications meeting the deadline requirements will be considered by the following: SBE staff, a representative of the CDE child nutrition staff and the SBE Screening Committee, which may include the SBE child nutrition liaison.
Finalist candidates will be asked to participate in a 15-minute telephone interview, which will be scheduled for one day during the week of January 5-9, 2015.
