Sacramento, California - Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today issued a proclamation declaring March 20, 2018 as Nowrūz Day in the State of California.

PROCLAMATION

Nowrūz, meaning “new day,” marks the beginning of spring and the Persian New Year. Observed for millennia on the vernal equinox, this holiday celebrates the renewal of nature and promotes values of peace and solidarity.

Nowrūz is shared by people of varied cultures worldwide, transcending borders and faiths. Many members of California’s diverse communities will mark the occasion by gathering with family and friends around a ceremonial “Haft Seen” table, set with an arrangement of seven items symbolizing health, happiness and prosperity.

With the change in seasons, it is fitting that all Californians welcome the wondrous revival of nature in the spirit of this ancient rite of spring.

NOW THEREFORE I, EDMUND G. BROWN JR., Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim March 20, 2018, as “Nowrūz Day.”

IN WITNESS WHEREOF I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of California to be affixed this 20th day of March 2018.
