Sacramento, California - Ahead of the Celebration of Life service today honoring the three Pathway Home employees killed in Yountville earlier this month, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. issued a proclamation declaring March 19, 2018 as a “Day of Remembrance of the Yountville Shooting” and ordered that flags be flown at half-staff over the State Capitol.

PROCLAMATION

On the morning of March 9, 2018, employees and clients of the Pathway Home gathered on the Yountville Veterans Home campus for a celebration. An armed man, a former Pathway Home client, entered the building, exchanged gunfire with law enforcement and then barricaded himself in a room with three Pathway Home employees. Ultimately law enforcement authorities discovered the worst possible outcome – all three employees, including an unborn child, were killed.

Today, we remember the three brave women and unborn child who died that day. These women’s lives were cut short by a man they were trying to help.

Pathway Home Executive Director Christine Loeber, staff psychologist Dr. Jennifer Gonzales Shushereba (and her unborn daughter Cecilia Rose Shushereba) and staff psychologist Dr. Jennifer Gray Golick committed themselves to helping veterans of war rebuild their lives while recovering from the trauma of deployment. We honor these women for their dedication and service, for their bravery in the face of terror, for the compassion they brought to veterans and their communities, and for the joy and love they shared with their families and loved ones. The loss to the entire community is immeasurable.

We honor the Pathway Home employees and clients and Yountville Veterans Home residents and employees who lost their friends and colleagues that day. We also pay tribute to the many first responders who took swift action to help protect the lives of everyone on campus that day.

On this Day of Remembrance, I have ordered that flags be flown at half-staff over the State Capitol.

NOW THEREFORE I, EDMUND G. BROWN JR., Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim March 19, 2018, as a “Day of Remembrance of the Yountville Shooting” in the State of California.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of California to be affixed this 19th day of March 2018.
