Washington, DC - The United States is concerned by reports that the Government of Burma has filed criminal charges against peaceful protesters engaged in campaign activities advocating reform of the National Education Law. We call for the immediate, unconditional release of all individuals being detained in the country as a result of exercising their right to peacefully assemble.

Washington, DC - The outcomes of the 28th Session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) underscored the importance of robust U.S. engagement at the Council, where the United States continues to work with countries from all regions to address urgent human rights concerns.  Secretary of State John Kerry’s statement to the Council during the high-level segment reaffirmed that U.S. leadership has helped to keep the Council at the forefront of international efforts to promote and protect human rights.  Seventy-eight states also made a groundbreaking commitment to countering violent extremism.

Counter-ISIL Coalition Provides Air Support in Battle for Tikrit

Washington, DC - At the request of Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, the Coalition today launched airstrikes in and around Tikrit in support of Iraqi Security Forces ground operations. These strikes were designed to destroy ISIL strongholds with precision – protecting innocent Iraqis by minimizing damage to infrastructure, and enabling Iraqi forces under Iraqi command to continue offensive operations against ISIL in the vicinity of Tikrit. All strikes were coordinated with the Government of Iraq and Iraqi Security Forces through our Joint Operation Center in Baghdad.

Under Secretary of State Wendy R. Sherman Travel to Switzerland

Washington, DC - Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman and the U.S. negotiating team will travel on March 25 to Lausanne, Switzerland, where they will join Secretary of State John Kerry to meet with Iranian officials. These bilateral consultations take place in the context of the P5+1 nuclear negotiations with Iran and thus include Deputy Secretary General for the EU's External Action Service Helga Schmid and her team. At the request of Secretary Kerry, Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz will travel to Lausanne to join in the negotiations.
