Rochester, Minnesota - Pancreatic cancer has long proved the least survivable of the most common forms of cancer, in part because it tends to spread before symptoms appear. Surgery has offered the longest remissions, but for many people with advanced cancer, an operation wasn’t an option. Now, thanks to improvements in chemotherapy, radiation and surgery, even this most recalcitrant of cancers is starting to budge, says Mark Truty, M.D., a Mayo Clinic gastrointestinal surgeon.

Consumers Union Praises Federal Legislation to End Surprise Medical Bills

Washington, DC - Consumers Union, the policy and advocacy arm of Consumer Reports, praised the introduction of the End Surprise Billing Act of 2015 requiring hospitals to give consumers advance notice if they might be charged out-of-network fees. The legislation, introduced by Congressman Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas), would require advanced patient consent before being treated by someone not on their insurance plan. If such consent is not possible if, for example, the patient is experiencing a medical emergency they would still only pay what they would have paid for the same covered benefits received from a health professional on their insurance plan.

Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (MJFF) and AbbVie launched Partners in Parkinson’s, a strategic health initiative to provide resources to help the nearly 1 million Americans living with Parkinson’s disease (PD) optimize their care and live well with the disease. To date, nearly 8,500 people have attended Partners in Parkinson’s events across the country, and the free, day-long program is coming to one more location in 2015, and six additional U.S. cities on Saturdays in 2016.
