Fresno, California - Damacio Diaz, 44, of McFarland, formerly a detective with the Bakersfield Police Department, pled guilty Tuesday to bribery, possession and attempted possession with the intent to distribute methamphetamine, and making and subscribing a false income tax return, Acting United States Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced.

Los Angeles, California - The chief executive officer and owner of a Westwood-based mortgage brokerage company that falsely promised to help distressed homeowners avoid foreclosure – but instead stole the equity in the homes and served as the homeowners’ impostor landlord – was sentenced Wednesday afternoon to 94 months in federal prison.

San Ysidro, California - FBI Top Ten Fugitive Philip Patrick Policarpio, who was wanted by the LAPD for the alleged murder of his pregnant girlfriend, and federally, for Unlawful Flight to Avoid Prosecution, was apprehended Sunday by agents with the U.S. Customs Border Protection.

Los Angeles, California - Attorney General Kamala D. Harris today sent a letter to the United States Department of Education, urging the Department to revoke federal recognition of the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools’ (ACICS).  ACICS is a major accreditor of for-profit schools and was the accreditor for the now defunct Corinthian Colleges, Inc. (“Corinthian”).  While accredited by ACICS, Corinthian intentionally targeted low-income, vulnerable Californians through deceptive and false advertisements and aggressive marketing campaigns that misrepresented job placement rates and school programs.

San Ysidro, California - A Mexican national captured recently in Modesto, who is wanted for a fatal shooting in his native country more than a decade ago, was turned over to Mexican law enforcement officials by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Wednesday at the San Ysidro border crossing south of San Diego.
