HR professionals: Deter tax ID theft with an open-door but closed-drawer policy

Washington, DC - Identity theft is always taxing on victims. But when it’s tax identity theft – where fraudsters file for tax refunds in someone else’s name – HR professionals can play a key role as the defender that deters the crime, the sentry that spots it, and the cavalry that rushes to the rescue. Tax-related identity theft was the most common form of ID theft reported to the FTC last year with 109,063 complaints, roughly a third of the total ID thefts we received. Tax Identity Theft Awareness Week is a good time for HR offices to review their battle plans. Here are tips from the FTC to make that easier.

Harris today issued an information bulletin to California law enforcement agencies, higher education administrators and campus security personnel, providing enforcement guidance on new and amended sexual assault and campus safety laws. The bulletin summarizes SB 967 (Senate pro Tempore Kevin de León, D-Los Angeles) and AB 1433 (Assemblymember Mike Gatto, D-Glendale), gives enforcement guidance in the context of existing state and federal statutes, and encourages increased collaboration between law enforcement and campus authorities.

Sacramento, California - An increased number of hatchery-reared juvenile winter-run Chinook salmon produced from adults that were collected as a precautionary measure to offset anticipated in-river drought related mortality will likely be released in early February, state and federal officials said. Additional broodstock was collected last year at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s (USFWS) Livingston Stone National Fish Hatchery (LSNFH) because this unprecedented drought is severely impacting survival of Sacramento River winter-run Chinook salmon, a state and federally listed endangered species.

Sacramento, California - Leonard E. Williams, 52, of Sacramento, was sentenced today to over seven years and three months in prison for conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud and two counts of money laundering, in connection with a mortgage fraud scheme, United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced. Williams was found guilty on July 24, 2014, by a federal jury after a six–day trial.
