$130 Million Available for Foundational Agricultural Research, Education and Extension

Washington, DC - The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that $130 million in funding is available for research, education, and extension projects to support sustainable, productive and economically viable plant and animal production systems, including certified organic production. This funding is available through the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) Foundational Program, authorized by the 2014 Farm Bill and administered by USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA).

Washington, DC - National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis announced $2.8 million in Japanese American Confinement Sites grants to fund educational programs, preservation projects, memorials, and exhibits. The 15 projects in five U.S. states will tell the story of the more than 120,000 Japanese Americans, two-thirds of whom were U.S. citizens, who were imprisoned by the U.S. government following the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.
Consumer Reports Finds That Nearly Half Of Sunscreens Tested Did Not Meet Their SPF Claims

New York - While Consumer Reports urges consumers to use sunscreen, the organization’s latest tests show that you may not be as protected as you think and it’s important to choose the right one. In CR’s latest annual tests and ratings of 65 water-resistant lotions, sprays, and sticks with SPF claims of 30 or higher, the organization found that 28 of them, a full 43 percent of the sunscreens tested below their advertised sun protection level. Two of the sunscreens tested, Banana Boat Kids Tear-Free, Sting-Free SPF 50 lotion and CVS Kids Sun Lotion SPF 50, tested at an SPF 8.

Tomorrow, the Department of Labor will be finalizing a rule to fix that by updating overtime protections for workers. In total, the new rule is expected to extend overtime protections to 4.2 million more Americans who are not currently eligible under federal law, and it is expected to boost wages for workers by $12 billion over the next 10 years.
