Washington, DC - Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo: "I extend my sincere congratulations on your National Day, on behalf of the people and Government of the United States.

"This year we celebrate 75 years of strong partnership between the United States and Iceland. I was proud to be the first Secretary of State to visit Iceland in over 10 years when I met Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir and Foreign Minister Guðlaugur Þór Þórðarson in Reykjavik in February. I was pleased to see that the inaugural Economic Dialogue we announced together during my visit was successfully held on June 7. The United States recently became Iceland’s largest single trading partner, and our overall trade in 2017 topped $800 million.

"Iceland is also a steadfast NATO Ally. We thank Iceland for its assistance with the Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan and the Coalition to Defeat ISIS. The United States looks forward to working with Iceland as the new chair of the Arctic Council to promote good stewardship of the environment and sustainable development in an Arctic region that remains stable and free from conflict.

"Congratulations again to the people of Iceland on your historic 75th anniversary of independence."
