Washington, DC - The Department of Justice’s Office of Justice Programs Tuesday announced it has awarded funding totaling over $62 million to provide services designed to protect officers and improve overall public safety. OJP’s Bureau of Justice Assistance and National Institute of Justice awarded grants to law enforcement departments, local jurisdictions, and training, technical assistance and research organizations throughout the United States.

Charlottesville, Virginia - A licensed Virginia attorney was arrested Tuesday on federal extortion and interstate threat charges for allegedly trying to extort a public company by threatening to inflict substantial financial and reputational harm on the company if his demands for a $200 million payment disguised as a purported “consulting agreement” were not met, announced Assistant Attorney General Brian A. Benczkowski of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division and Inspector in Charge Delany De Leon-Colón of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service’s Criminal Investigations Group.

Washington, DC - The owner of a physical security school pleaded guilty Tuesday to defrauding a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) program dedicated to rehabilitating military veterans with disabilities. 

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - A Pennsylvania doctor pleaded guilty to fraud and drug importation charges for his role in a scheme to illegally import medications not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and administer these medications to his patients, and unlawfully distributing oxycodone to his patients.

Washington, DC - Sunarko Kuntjoro, 68, a citizen of Indonesia, and three Indonesian-based companies, PT MS Aero Support (PTMS), PT Kandiyasa Energi Utama (PTKEU), and PT Antasena Kreasi (PTAK), were charged Tuesday in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia on December 10, 2019, with violating U.S. export laws related to U.S. sanctions against Iran.

New Haven, Connecticut - The Department of Justice Monday announced that Ahmad Khalil Elshazly, 22, of West Haven, Connecticut, has been charged by a federal criminal complaint with attempting to provide material support to the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), a designated foreign terrorist organization.
