Sacramento, California - Governor Gavin Newsom Tuesday announced the following appointments:

Gabriel Ravel, 36, of Sacramento, has been appointed general counsel at the California Health and Human Services Agency, where he has served as acting general counsel since 2018. Ravel has served as deputy director and general counsel at the California Department of Managed Healthcare since 2014. He held several positions at Covered California from 2011 to 2014, including attorney, acting general counsel and assistant general counsel. Ravel was an attorney at the Managed Risk Medical Insurance Board from 2010 to 2011 and at the Northwest Justice Project in 2010. Ravel was a law clerk at the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Washington from 2009 to 2010. He earned a Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $176,472. Ravel is a Democrat.

Jonathan Liu, 33, of Rancho Palos Verdes, has been appointed deputy secretary of policy and strategic planning at the California Health and Human Services Agency. Liu has served as deputy director of the Center for Health & Social Impact for Los Angeles County since 2018. He was chief quality officer of Correctional Health Services at the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services from 2016 to 2018 and was chief resident of quality improvement and patient safety at the Corporal Michael J. Crescenz VA Medical Center from 2015 to 2016. Liu earned a Doctor of Medicine degree from the Alpert Medical School of Brown University. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $190,008. Liu is a Democrat.

Marko Mijic, 32, of Sacramento, has been appointed deputy secretary of program and fiscal affairs at the California Health and Human Services Agency, where he has served in several positions including as acting deputy secretary of program and fiscal affairs since 2018 and assistant secretary of program and fiscal affairs from 2015 to 2018. Mijic held several position at the American Heart Association, including manager of licensing and new ventures from 2014 to 2015 and manager of government relations from 2013 to 2014. He held several positions at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, including special assistant from 2011 to 2013 and senior staff assistant from 2009 to 2011. Mijic earned a Master of Public Policy degree from the American University School of Public Affairs. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $170,004. Mijic is a Democrat.
