Sacramento, California - Leading a bipartisan coalition of 11 attorneys general, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra today expressed his strong opposition to the National Park Service’s (NPS) proposal to dramatically increase entrance fees at 17 national parks, including four parks within California: Yosemite National Park, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, and Joshua Tree National Park. Under the proposal, the per vehicle entrance fee during the five-month peak season would increase to $70 from $25 or $30. Motorcycle, bicycle and pedestrian entrance fees would also increase by double or more.

San Diego, California - Generous philanthropists Larry Ellison and Nikita Kahn have offered to match all donations to the San Diego Zoo Global Wildlife Conservancy dollar-for-dollar, up to $1 million. This charitable contribution supports the Conservancy’s Let’s Turn Things Around campaign, which is the organization’s most ambitious conservation fundraising campaign to date. This sizeable gift comes not long after Nikita Kahn provided the naming gift for the one-of-a-kind Rhino Rescue Center located at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

San Diego, California - A team of wildlife biologists from the San Diego Zoo, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), and the Conservation Biology Institute released more than 1,700 larvae of the endangered Quino checkerspot butterfly (Euphydryas editha quino) within its native range on the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge on Monday, Nov. 20, 2017. This is the second round of captive-rearing and release efforts for this California and Northern Baja California native butterfly species, whose population has been in drastic decline over the last decade.

San Diego, California - A team of animal health experts from San Diego Zoo Global recently spent time in Kenya working with the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary in the Namunyak community to enhance the medical care and animal husbandry capabilities of this facility.  The elephant orphanage was recently founded in the area to care for young elephants brought to the conservancy for  supportive care and rehabilitation.
