Sacramento, California - Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today announced the following appointments.

Peter Krause, 45, of Sacramento, has been appointed legal affairs secretary in the Office of the Governor, where he has served as chief deputy legal affairs secretary since 2013. Krause served as supervising deputy attorney general at the California Department of Justice, Office of the Attorney General from 2011 to 2012, where he served as a deputy attorney general from 2007 to 2011. He was an attorney at the Judicial Council of California, Administrative Office of the Courts from 2005 to 2007 and a litigation associate at Sheppard, Mullin, Richter and Hampton LLP from 1996 to 2005, where he was a litigation clerk from 1991 to 1996. Krause earned a Juris Doctor degree from Loyola Law School Los Angeles. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $163,212. Krause is registered without party preference.

Pete Southworth, 49, of Latrobe, has been appointed chief deputy legal affairs secretary in the Office of the Governor. Southworth has served as deputy secretary and general counsel at the California Transportation Agency since 2013. He served in several positions at the California Department of Justice, Office of the Attorney General from 1997 to 2013, including supervising deputy attorney general in the Government Law Section and deputy attorney general in the Land Law Section and in the Government Law Section. Southworth was an associate attorney at Downey, Brand, Seymour and Rohwer from 1993 to 1997 and served as a law clerk for the Honorable Ronald M. Whyte at the U.S. District Court, Northern District of California from 1992 to 1993. He earned a Juris Doctor degree from Columbia Law School. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $152,929. Southworth is registered without party preference.

Elise Rothschild, 51, of Davis, has been appointed deputy director of the Hazardous Waste Management Program at the California Department of Toxic Substances Control. Rothschild has served as chief at the Sacramento County Environmental Management Department Environmental Compliance Division since 2010, where she served as deputy chief from 2006 to 2010, and was supervising environmental specialist in the Hazardous Materials Division from 2000 to 2006, where she was hazardous materials specialist from 1987 to 2000. She is a member of the California Certified Unified Program Agencies Forum Board of Directors, Bridges Professional Treatment Services Inc. Board of Directors and of the California Hazardous Materials Investigators Association. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $154,788. Rothschild is registered without party preference.
