Sacramento, California - Governor Gavin Newsom signed an executive order today placing a moratorium on the death penalty in California. The executive order also calls for withdrawing California’s lethal injection protocols and immediately closing the execution chamber at San Quentin State Prison. The order does not provide for the release of any individual from prison or otherwise alter any current conviction or sentence.

Los Angeles, California - A former Glendale police officer was sentenced Friday to 21 months in federal prison after he pleaded guilty to a series of charges and admitted that he provided information to the Mexican Mafia that allowed an associate of the prison gang to escape justice for a time and that he also repeatedly mislead investigators who were probing his connections to the Mexican Mafia and Armenian organized crime.

Oakland, California - James Robert Lewis was sentenced to 76 months in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm and for violating the terms of his supervised release, announced United States Attorney David L. Anderson and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Special Agent in Charge John F. Bennett. The sentence was handed down today by the Honorable Phyllis J. Hamilton, Chief United States District Judge.
