Sacramento, California - After an 11-day trial, a federal jury found Satish Kartan, 45, and his wife, Sharmistha Barai, 40, guilty on March 14 of conspiracy to obtain forced labor and two counts of obtaining forced labor. In addition, Kartan was found guilty of fraud in foreign labor contracting. Assistant Attorney General Eric Dreiband for the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division, U.S. Attorney McGregor W. Scott, Matthew Perlman, Special Agent in Charge of the of the Diplomatic Security Service San Francisco Field Office, Sean Ragan, Special Agent in Charge of the Sacramento FBI Field Office, and Ryan L. Spradlin, the Special Agent in Charge for Homeland Security Investigations in Northern California made the announcement.

Sacramento, California - The California Department of Food and Agriculture (Department) recently conducted a public hearing to receive comments from the California olive oil industry and from the public on whether the operation of the Olive Oil Commission of California (Commission) should be continued. The Department is required to conduct such a hearing every five years pursuant to Sections 79891 and 79892 of the California Food and Agricultural Code. Based on the analysis of the hearing record, the Department has concluded that there is no substantial question as to whether the Commission should continue and therefore the Commission is authorized to operate for another five years through June 30, 2024 without the need for a producer vote.

San Diego, California - The names of 332 people have been removed from civil gang injunction lists affecting neighborhoods across San Diego County following a careful review by the District Attorney’s Office, which worked to confirm individuals’ lack of recent criminal and gang activity. The civil injunctions were filed several years ago in various cities across the county, often in response to communities seeing a spike in gang-related violence. The injunctions—which have had their critics— were court orders restricting the most active and dangerous gang members from congregating with other known gang members, fighting, carrying weapons, and intimidation.

Sacramento, California - Governor Gavin Newsom announced a major legislative proposal as part of his $1.75 billion package to confront the housing cost crisis. The new proposal sets higher short-term goals for housing that cities and counties must meet, and provides $750 million in support and incentives to help jurisdictions plan and zone for these higher, ambitious housing targets.
