Eagle Pass, Texas - U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Eagle Pass South Station are searching for a 3-year-old boy reported missing after attempting to cross the Rio Grande River with his mother, August 20.

“This is heartbreaking tragedy that occurs too often,” said Del Rio Sector Chief Patrol Agent Raul L. Ortiz. “Border Patrol agents are using all available resources in the search for the missing boy.”

At approximately 1:30 a.m., a group of 12 suspected undocumented immigrants were seen crossing the Rio Grande River near the Port of Entry. Responding agents were notified by members of the group that a woman and her 3-year-old son were swept away by the strong current while they were attempting to cross the river. Agents immediately began search and rescue efforts to locate the mother and child, with the assistance from CBP Air and Marine Operations aircraft.

On August 21, at approximately 11 a.m., Eagle Pass South Station marine agents discovered a female body matching the description of the missing 28-year-old Honduran woman. The search for the 3-year-old is ongoing.

The body was turned over to the custody of the Maverick County Justice of the Peace.
