Washington, DC - Imagine a miniature device that suffuses each room in your house with a different hue of the rainbow - purple for the living room, perhaps, blue for the bedroom, green for the kitchen. A team led by scientists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has, for the first time, developed nanoscale devices that divide incident white light into its component colors based on the direction of illumination, or directs these colors to a predetermined set of output angles. 

San Diego, California - Monday, eight West African dwarf crocodiles began to hatch from eggs at the San Diego Zoo’s Reptile House the first hatching of its kind in the Zoo’s 101-year history. Three baby crocs successfully hatched on their own, keepers assisted a fourth one in hatching, and more were expected to emerge from their eggs throughout the day. The new hatchlings are being cared for behind the scenes and the parents, an 11-year-old female named Yendi and a 50-year-old male named Kumba, can be seen by guests in the West African Forest habitat at Conrad Prebys Africa Rocks.

Washington, DC - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today expanded the approval of Zelboraf (vemurafenib) to include the treatment of certain adult patients with Erdheim-Chester Disease (ECD), a rare cancer of the blood. Zelboraf is indicated to treat patients whose cancer cells have a specific genetic mutation known as BRAF V600. This is the first FDA-approved treatment for ECD.
