Calexico, California - Wednesday, El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents assigned to the Calexico Station arrested a Mexican juvenile for suspected drug smuggling as he attempted to flee back into Mexico near the Buttercup Sand Dunes.

At approximately 9:30 p.m., Border Patrol agents observed four people carrying large bundles on their backs.  Soon after, agents responded to the area.  The individuals dropped their bundles and attempted to flee back into Mexico.

One person, a 17-year-old male, was caught and arrested just north of the border fence. Agents found 10 large bundles of marijuana in close proximity to him.

The marijuana bundles had a combined total weight of 253.41 pounds and have an estimated value of more than $152,000.

The man and marijuana were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for further investigation.

Last fiscal year, El Centro Sector seized more than 5,700 pounds of marijuana.
